One Week Later - An Update on the Fire

By Vanishing Inc. - Monday, June 17, 2024

It has been just over a week since the fire ripped through our Sacramento warehouse, burning everything to the ground. The support and encouragement from the magic community has been nothing short of amazing and we have been frequently asked for updates. Here's where things now stand, a week on:

We're shipping as normal
We set up in a corner of Murphy's Magic's warehouse and our team are at work, and shipping. Orders will be dispatched as normal. Obviously as so much stock was destroyed, we're running on a much smaller inventory than normal, but if it shows as in stock on the site, then it's something we can ship.

We're almost ready to move into a temporary warehouse
This week, we visited five potential warehouses and have found one that will be perfect. It'll take a while to move in, but we're hoping it will be relatively quick.

We're reprinting and reproducing
Our product team have done an exceptional job of working with our printers and manufacturers to kick off the reproduction of many of our products. Obviously, this is a long process that will take many months, but we're working as quickly as we can.

We've been through the rubble and saved what we can
We have been in this warehouse for eight years and, as you can imagine, we collected some pretty sentimental things. Photos, letters, cards, and one-of-a-kind things that represent our history. We were able to save a few small token items, and we'll treasure them more now than ever.

We're starting a rebuild
Step one is making the building safe. There were seven warehouses damaged in the fire and a crew is there around the clock ensuring that the exterior is made safe. Once that's done, the interior repairs will begin. Hopefully our offices and warehouse will be usable again within a year.

We've been checking in with our team
Most importantly, we've been keep in constant contact with the forty-seven people who make up Vanishing Inc. Everyone is doing fine, and we're all keen to work as a team to rebuild not just quickly, but better.

Again, we can't thank you enough for your support and encouragement through this awful time. We're doing everything we can to ensure that the service you've come to expect from us continues, whilst also coming to terms with the new reality of everything we lost.

Best wishes to you all, as you are overcoming this tragic loss. Very happy to hear that nobody was hurt in the warehouse fire. I studied fire protection for about 1 and a half semesters at our local technical college called NWTC in Marinette, WI. It has been a long time since I was in the classes but I do remember about the different suppression systems. Maybe this is something to look into for your next warehouse. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I don't want to think about life without Vanishing Inc., because my life has been enriched and touched by you all.
Sincerely,
Dave

Hang in there, VI team. I can only imagine that this situation has been one of the worst tragedies in your lives, but the thing I love most about magic is its focus on transformation. Sometimes we literally transform physical objects into other physical objects, sure, but at our best, we use the sense of wonder to transform people’s mindsets — from depressed to joyful, from scared to resilient, from hopeless to hopeful. I hope you all can hold onto that deep sense of transformation, as you wade through the sadness and joy of the grieving and rebuilding process. We’re here for you.

Sincerely,
Jeff Travilla

Did the fire department ever discover the cause of the fire?
